Happy Valentine’s Day to Me – Baggage Claim is Here!

Roses for Valentine's Day and for Baggage Claim

My wonderful, supportive husband brought me TWO dozen roses today: one for Valentine’s Day and one to congratulate me on the release of Baggage Claim. Isn’t he amazing? I sure do love him. In addition to working hard so I can stay home and write, he’s been so patient as I worked on preparing Baggage Claim for publication!

Baggage Claim

It’s a little like having a baby, but instead of nine months, Baggage Claim took me nearly nine years to produce. I started it in 2009 for NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), All of my sons had finally graduated from high school, and after all those years of homeschooling, I had some free time to do “me” things! Then I got a real job and didn’t have time for writing anymore. I looked at it every so often, made a few edits, changed a few plot points… and then put it away again. After a few years, I forced myself to finish it, and then I set it aside again. I started an outline for a sequel. (Oh – I  was also working on a few other books, all of which followed that pattern. I have a very short attention span.)

Squirrel!

Then I got serious (lost the day job) and decided to write a Christmas novella for a collection with my good friend, Chautona Havig, and two other authors. It didn’t take me long to realize that the novella – Snow Angels – was meant to be connected to Baggage Claim and its sequel. Having a commitment to other people forced me to finish that book and get it edited and polished up for publication. Once the novella was published, I had to get Baggage Claim cleaned up and ready to go.
Baggage Claim by Cathe SwansonIt was then that I realized how truly BAD Baggage Claim was.  It didn’t need to be cleaned up; it needed to be torn apart and rewritten. So I did it. The book needed humor, so I gave the children more distinct personalities and put my heroine into unexpected predicaments. I wanted more suspense, so I made the villain a little more villainous.

I had to update everyone’s ages, so the entire calendar was adjusted. The technology was probably out-of-date when I wrote it the first time!

I couldn’t have done it without them…

As I prepared Baggage Claim for publication, I had one advantage that most new authors lack: an amazing team of pre-readers. If Baggage Claim is fit to read, it’s because of their help and input. It was a team effort – and it kept me humble! I love those ladies. And in the end, I love Baggage Claim, and I’m itching to start Real Religion, the second book in the Great Lakes series.

Valentine’s Day Snow Angels Giveaway!

February 14th is the Big Day!

In honor of the long-awaited release of Baggage Claim, the first novel in my Great Lakes series, I’m giving away three paperback copies of the Snow Angels, the companion novella. The winners will be selected on Valentine’s Day, when Baggage Claim is released.

The Great Lakes Collection

Baggage Claim is set shortly before Snow Angels and takes place in the suburbs of Chicago and in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It’s a romantic suspense novel – suitable for Valentine’s Day! – but it’s funny, too, with the antics of the hero’s four young children. I think you’ll enjoy it.

Baggage Claim by Cathe Swanson

The next book, Real Religion, will return to Hope House and the Unity Plenkiss Community Center, which you may have visited in Snow Angels.  You will find familiar faces there, including Pete and Lisa. More suspense, more romance, more comedy…

I’m still mulling over ideas for the last book in the series, tentatively titled Higher Ground. Tally, from Snow Angels, might be a good heroine for that book, or maybe someone new.  I also like romances with older people (not OLD – I mean people in their mid-30’s to late 40’s). And I would like to take it back up north to the Upper Peninsula. Maybe I will need another book in the series. What do you think?

Pre-order Baggage Claim

There are just a few more days to get Baggage Claim at the special pre-order price! It will be available in paperback and also for Kindle. Kindle Unlimited readers can read it for FREE, or Amazon Prime members can borrow it as their monthly free read. (The same is true for Snow Angels.)

Valentine's Day Giveaway

Enter to Win!

In the meantime, I am giving away three paperback copies of Snow Angels! Winners can opt to receive a kindle version of the book if they prefer. International entries are welcome, but winners outside the United States will receive a digital copy instead of a paperback copy.

Snow Angels and Christmas Stalkings Christmas Stocking MASH-UP

Last month, I was blessed with a visit from one of my favorite people – Chautona Havig! We have been friends for a long time, and this year, we were part of the Christmas Lights team of authors. We had a terrific time together and came up with lots of good ideas for the future. One of the fun things we did was make a Christmas stocking to give away – a Snow Angels and Christmas Stalkings Mash-up stocking!

Here’s the story from Chautona’s point of view. Opinions expressed may not reflect those of the management…

It began innocently enough–just two friends shopping in Michael’s. We did the usual… you know, finding cool things, spending WAY too much money, laughing! Talking! But… but then this happened:

Christmas Stocking giveaway

And today’s the day!

Yep! It’s time! After terrorizing Michael’s with our incessant videos, we bought the stocking and filled that sucker! I’m a sucker for stockings, so that really does fit. Just sayin’.

What’s in this knitted sock of surprises? Well, if I tell you, it won’t be a surprise! Oh, all right. Here goes! First a couple of pictures….

The California Gold Rush Romance Collection – review and giveaway!

Is it possible there’s an inheritance far greater than gold, or is Thalia destined to remain empty, like the ghost town she inhabits? – Gold Haven Heiress by Jaime Jo Wright

I enjoyed all of the stories in this book, but I was especially interested in Jaime Jo Wright’s Gold Haven Heiress,  which is an unusual love story with interesting characters. Jack Taylor is a man who grew wealthy by taking advantage of gold rush miners. He’s a changed man now, and he’s using his ill-gotten riches to help others by building a community in Gold Haven, an abandoned goldmining town, to be a place of redemption, where people can come to be healed and live safely together. He didn’t expect to find the cast-off “soiled dove” Thalia Simmons hiding in the deserted town, and while he is drawn to her, she struggles to reconcile concepts of a caring man and a loving God with her painful history.

Gold Haven Heiress, part of The California Gold Rush Romance Collection

Thalia is well-drawn. Ms. Wright did a good job of portraying the prickly, shell-shocked woman. Throughout the book, her impulsive words, actions and choices are consistent with her character and circumstances. I liked the development of her friendship with Celeste. It’s hard to squeeze a story into a short novella, but this author succeeded in bringing it all together – characters, setting, plot and all.

Civilizing Clementine was another fun story in this collection, and The Golden Cross was an interesting story about the Chinese culture during the gold rush.

The Price of Love by Amanda Barratt
The Best Man in Brookside by Angela Bell
Civilizing Clementine by Dianne Christner
The Marriage Broker and the Mortician by Anne Greene
The Lye Water Bride by Linda Farmer Harris
A Sketch of Gold by Cynthia Hickey
Love is A Puzzle by Pam Hillman
The Golden Cross by Jennifer Rogers Spinola
Gold Haven Heiress by Jamie Jo Wright

Jaime Jo Wright – Author Interview

Jamie Jo Wright - Author Interview at www.catheswanson.com

I met Jaime Jo online through the American Christian Fiction Writers, but even though we both live in the land of Packers and Bratwurst, we haven’t yet met in person. I recently read one of her novellas, Gold Haven Heiress, in the California Gold Rush Romance Collection, and asked if I could interview her on my website. She graciously said yes and donated a paperback copy of the book for me to give away!  Barbour makes beautiful paperback novella collections. This one has covers that open and fold out to reveal western landscapes, and the paper is beautiful soft and heavy with deckle edges. Beautiful. See the raffle form below for your chance to win it!

Welcome, Jaime! It’s fun to have you here.  I know authors have the best book recommendations, so tell me… what are you reading now?

I am currently in between books, actually. But LOVED reading Kara Isaac’s “Close To You” and Joanne Bischof’s “Lady and the Lionheart”. They were both so well written and have stuck with me far longer than most books I’ve read this year!

Do you have a favorite contemporary author?

Well, it sounds redundant now, lol, but I LOVE Kara Isaac. She’s new to contemporary romance but has such wit and voice I can’t get enough of her.

What’s your favorite genre for your personal reading?

I waffle between mysteries and historical romance. It’s a bonus if they’re combined!

What one book – other than the Bible! – has most greatly influenced your life?

Ohhh, that’s a great question! I was greatly impacted by Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s “Cost of Discipleship”. It pretty much hits you between the eyes in how seriously you’re going to live your faith.

How about writing? What’s your favorite genre for writing?

I love historical romance with twists of mystery and suspense!

What is the hardest part of writing for you?

Time. It’s a challenge to write with a full time job and two kids under the age of 6. Balancing the home and church also makes it a tad sketchy to eek out hours of writing time.

That’s a full plate! What is your “day job”?

I’m the Director of Employee Sales, Development & Associate Relations for a medium-sized corporation. It keeps me hopping for sure!

What does your writing process look like?

Well, considering time is difficult to find, it’s more like I write scenes in my head during the day and then grab 15 minute snippets to dictate them down on my phone app or type them on my laptop. Ideally, I get an hour or two at night after the kids are in bed to really focus. Coffee is always, ALWAYS involved.

Do you ever experience writer’s block?

I don’t! I know that sounds weird, but if I’m not sure what to write I usually just plow ahead and write anyway. It often gets deleted, but if I just sit and stare at the laptop then I’m definitely not moving ahead.

Do you know the ending of a book when you start writing it?

Usually. I typically have the skeleton framework and then fill in the rest on the go.

Gold Haven Heiress

Gold Haven Heiress by Jaime Jo Wright, in The California Gold Rush Romance Collection

Gold Haven Heiress had some emotionally intense and some lighthearted scenes. Do you laugh and cry as you write your books? How emotionally attached do you get to your characters? If they were real, would they be your friends?

I’m not a crier, and I don’t usually get attached to my characters on an emotional level. I love creating them, molding them, and seeing them come to life, but they are fictional after all, and the fact that I have their conversations in my head is scary enough. Lol If they were real? Some of them might be my friends. Some of them would probably drive me nuts. LOL!

What are your current projects?  Do you have any books coming out soon?

I’m currently working on my next novella, releasing in July 2017. It is part of Barbour’s “Of Rags and Riches Romance Collection – a Gilded Age Novella Collection”. My novella is titled: “The Flyfisherman’s Nymph”.

I understand that’s set in Wisconsin, and I am looking forward to it! In the meantime, where can we find you online?
