A Discovery Quilt

The GloryQuilts Block of the Month event starts in January, and it’s going to be so much fun!

We may not be able to get together in person, but this year-long virtual quilt class is going to be nearly as much fun! It’s a “discovery quilt,” which means you choose your own fabrics, but you won’t know exactly what the finished quilt will look like until you sew it all together.  I promise… it will be beautiful! Sign up HERE for a year of quilt patterns, instructions and fun!

You can do this!

This class is suitable for a “confident beginner.” If you can use a rotary cutter and a sewing machine, you can do this! The monthly blocks are interesting and attractive, but they’re all rotary cut and  straight-line machine piecing – no templates, curves, applique or foundation paper piecing.  It’s a  traditional sampler quilt with 12″ blocks in a pleasing arrangement. The finished quilt is 70″ X 91″ with one 3″ border. If you want a bigger quilt, you can easily add another border.

2 Background Fabrics

Background Fabric 1 is the prominent fabric in this quilt, so it should have some style to it. You can use a print or a “textured” solid but not a true solid fabric. No directional prints, stripes, or plaids. Background Fabric 2 should be similar but more plain.

  • Background Fabric 1  –  4  yards
  • Background Fabric 2  –  3/4 yard

4 More Fabrics

Fabric 1 is the primary contrast fabric and is also used for the border. It should be a strong contrast to the background fabrics. No directional prints, stripes, or plaids.  Fabric 2 should contrast with Fabric 1 and not blend in with it. The other fabrics are coordinates. They should contrast with the background fabrics but can be directional prints, solids, stripes, or plaids.

  • Fabric #1  –  3 1/4 yards
  • Fabric #1a  –  1/4 yard
  • Fabric #2  –  1 1/4 yard
  • Fabric #2a  –  1/4 yard

Here’s What You Will Need

  • Rotary cutting equipment
  • Sewing machine in good working order
  • Scissors, straight pins, seam ripper
  • Thread to match the background fabric
  • An iron and ironing board

Here’s How it Works

It’s like a year-long quilt class! The total cost, for all the patterns, instructions, and the group membership, is just $30.  Every month,  you’ll receive a 12″ quilt block pattern by email.  After you make your block, you can share it with the rest of us in the private Facebook group! If you need help at any time, you can email me or ask questions in the group.  I’ll  be sharing some helpful tips and techniques in the group, too. Step-by-step, throughout the year, we’ll make the quilt blocks, and near the end of the year, you’ll get the instructions for assembling your quilt blocks into a  beautiful quilt top. It’s always fun to see everyone’s finished work!

NOTE: You do not need to participate in the Facebook group to make the quilt, but it will be much more enjoyable if you do!
